FAQs

Q. Will Packrat affect my bandwidth?

A. Packrat comes with a built-in network bandwidth throttle option that limits its use of your Internet connection during backups.  This option can be set to a variety of levels.

Q. Can Packrat back up laptops and mobile computers?

A. Yes, Packrat works on any type of computer capable of connecting to the Internet.

Q. What does Packrat cost?

A. Packrat Automatic Data Protection for businesses and Packrat Lite pricing are both based on the amount of data being protected.  Pricing is available by contacting us at (901) 382-2500 and asking for the Sales Department.  Please have an estimate of your data size for accurate pricing.  If you cannot determine the amount of data to be backed up, please contact us so we can assist you.

Q. What do I have to do to run my Packrat backups?

A. Nothing whatsoever!  Once Packrat is installed on your server or workstation, your backup process becomes completely automatic.  Packrat is the ultimate example of a "set it and forget it" backup solution.

Q. Will my data be secure?

A. Absolutely!  Your communication with the Packrat server is via a SSL (Secure Socket-Layer) connection, and your data on the server is encrypted using an AES algorithm in CBC mode (this is government-level encryption).  No one can view your data, including us.

Q. Is Packrat compliant with industry standards and requirements?

A. Yes!  Packrat brings your organization in compliance with many government regulations, including HIPPA, Sarbanes Oxley, NASD and Graham Leach Bliley.

Q. Will Packrat slow down my computer?

A. No more than any other low-impact software.  Packrat comes with a pre-set File Delta feature that divides large, complicated files into small, orderly files before backing them up.  This keeps your computer's workload light.

Q. What does "incremental back up" mean?

A. An incremental backup along with In-File Delta only transmits the changes to a file, not the file itself.  Thus, once you have backed up a file, only the parts of the file that have changed since your last backup will be sent during the next scheduled backup.  This means your total upload for any given day will be extremely small and fast.

Q. Where is my data stored?

A. Your data is stored in a secure server vault in the Memphis, TN, area.  It is also copied nightly to an identical secure facility in Birmingham, AL.

Q. Is my data tested after it is stored?

A. Once your data is stored in our secure facility, it undergoes weekly testing for continuity, thus eliminating any chance of your backup becoming corrupted.

Q. How do I access my data?

A. The Packrat software allows you to browse and restore files from the backup server any time. There is no charge for this service.  You also receive a login and password to a web version of Packrat accessible from anywhere in the world.  This allows you to restore your data to any Internet-connected computer.
